The Botanical is a beloved Perth institution located in the prestigious Kings Park and is the number 1 tourist attraction in Perth, W.A. Our project began under extraordinary circumstances. The site had been ravaged by a kitchen fire in November 2024, resulting in the demolition of all peripheral structures, leaving only the original, compromised steel framework.
The new design, which brilliantly envisioned the cafe’s renewal, was the creation of Scott Wilson Design. Dedicated Construction was honoured to be selected as the preferred builder for this high-profile project, forming a critical partnership tasked with bringing this vital new community asset to life.
This was a project defined by its constraints, high public interaction, and the substantial weight of replacing a cherished Perth landmark. The primary objective was to resurrect the restaurant to a higher standard, both aesthetically and operationally, for the client while retaining the spirit of its former life.
The restaurant aesthetic achieves a new high-end feel while effortlessly blending in with the natural environment, thanks to a beautiful mix of native solid timbers – WA Blackbutt, Jarrah in multiple forms and bespoke finishes like Calacatta marble, Terrazzo and solid brass.
This dedication to local and international quality materials enhances the design and pays homage to the surrounding botanical gardens.
Key architectural features include the distinctive new solid Blackbutt timber-clad ceilings and Jarrah-clad steel beams and posts featuring negative details up against the replacement of the textile membrane roof structure to the front of house.
The operational core was completely redesigned and extended with a full commercial kitchen fit out, dishwashing area, new cool rooms and beer systems, integrated with advanced environmental systems, featuring 2 x full large package AC units and an evaporative make-up air. The unique pyramid design of the building’s roof consisted of new wide panel cliplock roofing installed over a structural plywood lining and integrated membranes.
The large number of highly detailed custom joinery items built in-house by Dedicated Construction in our Osborne Park workshop is the final jewel in the crown for this amazing redevelopment.
We successfully managed to navigate the extreme logistical constraints of working within a high-traffic, sensitive national park environment. Our team had to work tirelessly to ensure the safety of the public and minimal disruption to the park’s operations, all while preserving the integrity of the surrounding landscape and meeting the very stringent Kings Park Authority contractor’s management plans.
