Project Overview
Early Concept: Woods Bagot
Design Development & Construction Documentation: Dedicated Construction
Builder: Dedicated Construction
We were proud to collaborate once again with our long-standing clients, General Public Group, on their flagship coastal venue, Bert’s, located in one of Perth’s most iconic beachfront positions in City Beach.
Following the acquisition of the former Odyssea premises, the project required immediate mobilisation, with no lease-free period available. Our team moved quickly to undertake comprehensive design development and construction delivery.
Woods Bagot provided an outstanding early design concept, which our Dedicated Construction design team then developed through detailed documentation and IFC drawings. Throughout this process, we introduced substantial refinements and additional design features, enhancing both functionality and aesthetic impact to deliver the final built outcome.
Interior Transformation
The project involved a complete strip-out of the front-of-house area, including the removal of the former central island bar. Relocating the main bar to the rear wall significantly opened the floor space, improving circulation and increasing patron capacity.
The new 21-metre bar—brick-clad with solid Victorian Ash detailing—was crafted in our DeCo joinery workshop and paired with fully customised stainless steel hospitality workstations. A striking overhead feature structure creates a strong visual statement upon entry.
The back bar incorporates weatherboard detailing, solid timber floating shelves, and a recessed beer wall that introduces colour while complementing the venue’s light-filled coastal palette.
Ceiling work on the internal balcony was another major enhancement. By removing the existing ceiling and implementing strategic structural engineering solutions, we achieved a substantial increase in ceiling height. Structural steel beams were clad with feature boarding and integrated LED strip lighting, creating a warm ambient wash across contrasting acoustic panels—dramatically improving both atmosphere and acoustics.
Bathrooms were completely reimagined, featuring terrazzo flooring, refined wall panelling, and custom-made vanities manufactured in our DeCo joinery facility.
Alfresco & External Work
The alfresco area underwent significant reconfiguration better to connect the outdoor space with the main restaurant. Removal of the original island bar allowed improved access and cohesion between zones.
A new outdoor bar structure was constructed, fully equipped to operate as both a bar and a morning café. A new concrete stair structure was introduced to create a more welcoming and direct connection from the street to the deck—transforming what was previously a constrained entry into a feature arrival experience.
Approximately 90 linear metres of perimeter planters were reduced in height and replanted with low-profile landscaping, ensuring uninterrupted views of the Indian Ocean while softening the edge of the venue.
In collaboration with Cover Co, we delivered a combined Kingspan solid roofing and retractable roof system to the alfresco area. The design was carefully coordinated around two significant pine trees, incorporating custom curved joinery elements that encircle and celebrate these natural features.
Heritage Integration
Within the main foyer, we constructed a bespoke joinery wall showcasing historical photographs and memorabilia from the original City Beach Surf Life Saving Club—where Bert’s Surf Shack once stood. This installation pays homage to the site’s heritage and provides the narrative inspiration behind the venue’s name.
Bert’s now stands as a refined yet relaxed coastal destination, seamlessly blending contemporary hospitality design with local history and one of Western Australia’s most spectacular beachfront settings.
If you haven’t experienced it yet, we encourage you to book a table and enjoy it for yourself.
